Taste
The Sommelier recognized this wine for its firm tannin taste. This wine tastes rich and bold, as the typical wine made with aglianico grapes from Campania supposes to be. It appears as clear garnet with orangish reflections. A gentle swirl will reveal fat and slow legs. Its aroma of chocolate, coffee, anise, black-pepper, and oak is warmed by a smooth perception of alcohol and harmonized by a rich bouquet of blackberry, cherry, and geranium. At its first sip there is an immediate recognition of tannins followed by chocolate, coffee, anise, black-pepper, and oak notes producing a pronounced but balanced taste. The after taste exalts the alcohol, oak, chocolate, and blackberry tastes that dominate the mouth feeling. It comes of age when bottled. This is a well structured wine, which humans have enjoyed since the Roman age, and now offering a wine tasting experience for wine lovers seeking rich and unique flavors.
Serving Tips
The Aglianico del Taburno is a great wine for savory dishes, red sauces, and both medium and intensely flavored foods. The Sommelier suggests this wine pairs well with grilled or roasted veal, beef or game meats. Pasta with mushroom, meatball, and alfredo sauces are the international dishes that best pair with Aglianico del Taburno. This wine should be enjoyed at temperature in the range of 61°F - 64°F. However a few degrees colder may smooth the tannin hit of this wine, which stabilizes through 10 minutes of decanter. This wine fits well into that easy spot of any quiet and relaxing dinner by one or two people
Wine Appellations
The Aglianico del Taburno is produced in the territories of few small districts at the feet of Mount Taburno, in Campania, a land dotted with vineyards and olive groves. Taburno is the fruit of favorable climatic conditions and the know-how and experience of the area's skilled winegrowers who are the best patrons of the local grape varieties, especially Aglianico. The production zone of the Aglianico del Taburno in the province of Benevento is a district of high hills that are subject to particularly severe winters. It’s extraordinary how the Aglianico variety has successfully adapted to such conditions, even at altitudes of 500-600 meters above sea level. The fine and consistent quality of the wine produced in the area enabled local producers to obtain DOC recognition in 1987. Aglianico Grape History The Aglianico grape has extremely ancient origins, most likely cultivated in the early period of Roman history. It constituted the principal grape in the production of Falernum, a wine that was celebrated by the ancient poets. The variety was introduced to Italy by the Greeks at the time of the foundation of Cumae (the modern Cuma) or soon afterward, while the transformation of the name from Hellenica into Hellanica and then into Aglianico occurred at the end of the 15th century - the period of Aragonese domination over the Kingdom of Naples.
The Winery History
The winery is situated in the district of the Taburno, an area of Campania that stretches from the river Calore to the slopes of the Pentime Mountain. The hillsides are sunny and covered with grapevines. In these lands, a lot of faith and hard work has taken place to improve the production of these wines. The first vines where planted over this area 150 years ago. The strong vines were grown, nurtured, cultivated, and harvested with love and passion from the first makings of this family wine. The winery owner states with a typical intense look of Italian wine makers :”My wine is the blood of these fields and everything that I have in me.”
