Wine Appellations
The Lambrusco Mantovano originates from the area bordered by the Oglio (west) and Po`(east) rivers as well as the Oltrepo` Mantovano, which is the area on the east side of the Po river within the Mantua province. Mantua is located in the southeast side of the Lombardia region of northern Italy, very close to the Veneto region. Typically, a mix of these varieties will vinify the Lambrusco Mantovano: Lambrusco Viadanese o Ruberti, Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Marani, Lambrusco Salamino, Ancellotta, and Fortana. The Lambrusco Mantovano wine received the Italian Authority D.O.C. recognition in 1987. Due to its characteristics it may be considered a wine to be enjoyed throughout the meal and one of the few red wines that can be served chilled. Lambrusco Mantovano Lands History The cultivation of the wine grape in the territory of the Mantua province was mentioned by the Latin poet Virgil (back to 30 a.c.), who declared that the wine of the Mantuan hills was second only to the celebrated Falernum (the Italian area in the south of Ancient Rome, which today belongs to the northern province of Caserta - Campania). Various documents indicate that grapes were being grown and vinified in the area as early as the year 765. However, generalized development of winemaking in the district began around the year 1100. Until the fifties, almost all of the farms in the Mantuan area devoted considerable space to the growing of vines. The cultivation was emphasized between the Oglio and the left bank of the Po as well as in the Oltrepo Mantovano both belong to the Lombardia region, in the northeast area of Italy very close to the Veneto region.
